After receiving accolades at various film festivals, A Holy Conspiracy, starring (late) Soumitra Chatterjee and Naseeruddin Shah, was released in cinemas on 29 July 2022.
The movie directed by Saibal Mitra is a courtroom drama and depicts the story of teacher Kunal Joseph, played by Sraman Chattopadhyay, who is accused of not following his school’s doctrine to teach the Biblical story of creation (before Darwin).
Baske is subjected to suspension from service and put into custody. Reverend Basanta Kumar Chatterjee played by Soumitra Chatterjee and Anton De Souza played by Shah are old allies who have fought many battles for the human rights of minority communities, and grave cases of social and legal injustice. Now they find themselves facing off against one another. The teacher’s right to choose his rationality over faith forms the rest of the movie.
The movie is loosely structured on the famous Scopes Monkey Trial in the US in 1925. Other actors include Kaushik Sen, Biplab Dasgupta, Partha Pratim Majumder, Amrita Chatterjee and Subhrajit Dutta.
