Parag Desai, the executive director of Wagh Bakri Tea Group died at a private hospital in Ahmedabad on Sunday. He had been brought to the hospital on October 15 after he suffered a brain haemorrhage when he fell warding off stray dogs near his residence. The 49-year-old was the fourth generation in the family business, started by his great-grandfather Narandas Desai in 1892.
The Wagh Bakri Tea Group, in an Instagram story, said, “With profound grief, we regret to inform the sad demise of our beloved Parag Desai”.
Desai had an MBA degree from the Long Island University in New York and was one of two executive directors on the board of Wagh Bakri Tea Group. He joined the family business in 1995 when the company’s revenue was less than ₹100 crore and took charge of expanding its operations outside Ahmedabad, introducing the ecommerce platform buytea.com. He also spearheaded the group’s sales, marketing and exports division. Today, the Wagh Bakri Tea Group has a turnover of over Rs 2000 crore. It exports to over 60 countries.
