Chennai: Vijay TV was forced to abort airing of the latest episode of its flagship weekend chat show NeeyaNaana at 11th hour due to the uproar among section of the society that accused the concept of the episode that was supposed to be aired yesterday (22nd October) of supporting objectification of women.
The Channel and the producers of the show decided to stop airing of the show after two different groups launched a Police Complaint demanding action against the makers of the show under the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
The show director Antony claimed that a police complaint had forced them to drop the show and apparently, the channel has aired another episode that deal with the issues in Real Estate Industry.
The Promo of the weekly shows aired during the middle of the week went viral due to the topic of discussion ‘Who is more beautiful?: Kerala women or Tamil women. However, The channel had deleted the Promos on Twitter and Facebook on Saturday evening owing to the pressure from various corners.
However, Neeya Naana show Director Anthony wrote on his FB, “In the show, Kerala women and Tamil women spoke personally and publicly about the beauty of their clothes, beauty of their jewellery, beauty of their leadership. Their voices have been muzzled this time by leftist feminists. They have got a stay through the police that we shouldn’t speak about women’s beauty at all. Why are they creating noise without even having the patience to listen to these college girls? Demanding a ban before a show is even released – what is the difference between religious fundamentalists, casteist fundamentalists and these leftist fundamentalists?”
While Tamil Nadu is already boiling under the Mersal Mania for speaking against government policies on GST and demonetization, Vijay TV has just averted another debate just by pulling the plug at right time though it my be seen as a bowing down under pressure by another section of the society.
