Deal comes as Vice continues to solidify local multi-platform content partnerships across Asia, following the recent launch of Vice in India
Jakarta: Vice Indonesia today announced the youth media brand’s first local foray into feature film. Directed by one of Asia’s most renowned filmmakers, Joko Anwar, ‘When We Dance’ is set for release by the end of 2019, being produced in partnership with socially minded technology company GO-JEK.
Anwar made his directorial debut with the 2005 comedy ‘Janji Joni,’ having burst onto the international film scene in 2003, as a writer on the hit movie ‘Arisan!’. Last year’s supernatural horror, ‘Pengabdi Setan,’ was a breakout hit, with theatrical releases in more than 40 countries further cementing Anwar’s position as “one of the region’s best genre filmmakers.”
Mo Morris, Managing Director Vice Indonesia, stated “We are all incredibly excited to be working with Joko Anwar, one of Asia’s most-challenging film directors and GO-JEK, with its new push into bold and innovative storytelling, felt like the perfect partner..”
Vice Indonesia will also partner with GO-JEK on a slate of original content—starting with the sports documentary series ‘Underdogs’ that focuses on athletes rising above prejudice, poverty, and physical pain to achieve greatness. The partnership will continue with ‘Upstarts,’ a series focussed on people pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in Indonesia. Earlier episodes from both series have already been viewed more than 4 million times.
Mo continues… “….we’re really excited to continue the series and capture the drama and struggles that Indonesia’s athletes go through on their fight to the top.”
GO-JEK, the leading provider of on-demand services including transportation, food delivery, logistics, and mobile payments in the country, also express its contentment on the remarkable collaboration with Vice.
Christopher Smith, SVP of Content and Distribution GO-JEK explained... “Following on a very successful pilot slate of content with Vice, it’s very exciting to continue our work with them on Underdogs and Upstarts. Extending that partnership in the co-production of a feature film with Joko Anwar continues to exhibit the spirit of the GO-JEK + Vice partnership, working to bring important and powerful storytelling to Indonesia.”
Vice Indonesia launched in 2016, as a major market expansion into the world’s fourth largest nation.
