Yesterday, I lost a dear friend—a constant presence throughout my career and a force of nature in the media and advertising industry. For over 30 years, Bhaskar Das was not just a colleague but an integral part of my professional journey. Print media was at the core of everything we did, and as the head of the most influential newspaper in the country, Bhaskar was always at the heart of it. Yet, no matter how demanding his role, Bhaskar’s trademark enthusiasm and openness to fresh ideas never wavered.
One of my most cherished memories with Bhaskar was at Cannes, a place where creativity and excellence are celebrated. Lodestar had just won a Gold for L’Oréal. Bhaskar was there with me, and when the win was announced, I insisted he join me on stage. It was a moment that truly captured the essence of our partnership—his support, our shared vision, and the drive for excellence that bound us together.
In the last several years, I had the privilege of co-chairing the IAA Leadership Awards with him. Together, we worked tirelessly to elevate the stature of the event, and Bhaskar’s wisdom and guidance were instrumental in its success. Even as his health faltered, his dedication never waned. He remained an unwavering source of counsel, bringing his characteristic grace and wisdom to every challenge.
Bhaskar’s life was beautifully complemented by his wife, Shoma, whom he fondly referred to as the wind beneath his wings. Their bond was evident in the strength and support they gave each other. Despite his health struggles, Bhaskar never lost his warmth or optimism. On January 1st, I called to wish him a Happy New Year. Bhaskar, from his hospital bed, responded warmly, even directing me to speak to his son, Udit. Days later, I visited him in the hospital with Agnello. For over an hour, he was his spirited self, animatedly discussing content marketing and sharing anecdotes with his signature humor and passion.
It was impossible to tell he was unwell—such was his resilience and positivity. When I left that day, I felt reassured that we would meet again. That’s why the news of his passing yesterday was so devastating. Watching the entire Times Group and the stalwarts of the advertising and media industry gather to honour him only underscored how deeply Bhaskar was admired and loved.
His sharp wit, his unique “BD-isms,” his elegant style, his optimism, and his spirited debates—delivered in his eloquent and evolved English—are etched in my memory. Even though he stepped away from BCCL some time ago, Bhaskar’s influence on the media landscape was enduring, and his legacy within the Times Group remains unparalleled.
Bhaskar was more than a colleague or collaborator. He was a friend, a guide, and a beacon of positivity. His passing marks the end of an era, not just for me but for everyone who had the privilege of knowing or working with him.
I will miss him deeply, but I take solace in the fact that his lessons, his spirit, and his influence will live on. Rest in peace, Bhaskar.
