Mumbai: Broadcaster Star India that has successfully bagged the IPL Media Rights from 2018 to 2022 has written to the BCCI asking them to allow political advertisements during the IPL season as this year’s season of IPL falls close to the upcoming Parliament Elections.
The Media Rights Agreement signed between BCCI and Star India prohibits airing of any Political commercial as the Clause 8.6 (B) states “slotting of any political and/or religious advertisements during transmission is not permitted.”
While Star India, in its, letter written to the BCCI pointed out the ‘tremendous revenue potential’ of the election season, the BCCI have not yet responded to Broadcaster’s request. The relaxation in rule will help Star India to rake in huge volume of advertisements both in National feeds in Hindi and English and for its regional language feeds.
The 2019 season of the Indian Premier League will be the twelfth season of the IPL and it commences on 23rd March 2019 and concludes on 19th May 2019, falling exactly in the middle of the prime campaigning period for 17th LokSabha elections that is scheduled to to be held in 7 phases from 11 April 2019 to 19 May 2019.
