India’s renowned journalism school, the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media (IIJNM) near Bengaluru, has regrettably announced its closure due to a significant decline in admissions. According to media reports, the institute sent an email to candidates for the 2024-25 academic year requesting their bank details to facilitate a fee refund.
“The management of the Indian Institute of Journalism & New Media (IIJNM) regrets to inform you that we will no longer offer programmes in Journalism. This decision was reached as the number of applicants so far this year is far below what is needed for a viable programme,” the email stated.
The institute, known for its excellence in journalism education over the past 24 years, cited financial viability as the primary reason for its closure. “The recent environment in which we have been operating, it is not possible to attract enough students to avoid huge financial losses to continue the programme,” the email elaborated.
To ensure a prompt refund, the email requested the new batch of students’ banking information, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “Without waiting for the planned start of the course this year on July 22, 2024, we are giving you notice of closing down our beloved Institution. We recognize it might pose some difficulty for you, but we have no other choice,” it continued. The email assured students that the refund process would be completed within ten days of receiving the necessary banking details.
