Mumbai : GigaFiber service from Reliance Jio will start in 1,600 cities across India on 5th September 2019 starting at Rs 700 per month while the plans will go up to Rs 10,000 per month.
Reliance Jio Chairman Mukesh Ambani said his company has come up with a set-top-box that will come with support for the existing digital cable TV business of local cable operators.
This means that Jio Box will supply two services — the regular cable TV from the existing cable, and a new, high-end service via fiber — both using the same box.
This is expected to quell fears of large-scaled redundancy among existing cable operators and allow for a joint play of both services.
Those who are willing to pay for one year under various annual plans will get an LED TV free of cost under the Jio Welcome Plan. The TV could be a full HD or a 4K TV, depending on the plan availed, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said.
The fiber service will also come with free subscriptions to most premium apps. However, services such as Amazon Prime Video and Netflix are unlikely to be part of the plan.
Jio Fiber will also release movies on the same day as they are released in theaters, starting in the middle of 2020. It is built on Android TV operating system and will support some third party apps, according to sources.
The box will come with unlimited premium content and a console-like gaming service. It will support ‘almost all’ gaming controllers and also an app-based controller.
It will support social and multi-player gaming with low latencies.
