New Delhi: In a significant development in Indian media, veteran journalist Rahul Kanwal has announced his departure from the India Today Group after an illustrious tenure spanning more than 22 years. Serving as News Director of TVTN and Executive Director of Business Today, Kanwal leaves behind a formidable legacy that has shaped the landscape of television journalism in the country.
Known for his sharp political insights, incisive election coverage, and fearless investigative reporting, Kanwal has been a defining voice at both India Today and Aaj Tak. His journey from a passionate young journalist to one of the country’s most influential newsroom leaders is emblematic of the growth and opportunity that the India Today Group has long championed.

In an internal communication to staff, Kalli Purie, Vice Chairperson of the India Today Group, paid tribute to Kanwal’s contributions, calling his career “the quintessential India Today Group narrative—an extraordinary journey of organic growth, limitless opportunities, and a meteoric rise that benefited both sides.”
Over the past twelve years, Kanwal played a pivotal role in building high-performing editorial teams and creating impactful journalistic properties, earning the newsroom accolades and industry admiration. Under his leadership, the newsroom evolved into one of the most dynamic and respected in the Indian media ecosystem.
“Change is never easy, but it is the lifeblood of news,” Purie wrote, hinting at the next chapter not just for Kanwal, but for the organization as well. “He has mentored a strong second line, which is locked and loaded for what comes next. It’s now your turn to shine.”
While Rahul Kanwal’s next move remains undisclosed, his departure marks the end of an era—and the beginning of a new one for both him and the India Today Group.
