Union Minister Anurag Thakur revealed that the government is working towards preinstalling satellite tuners in TV sets to eliminate the need for set-top boxes.
Acknowledging the growth of GECs on ‘free satellite dish,’ which has attracted millions of viewers, Thakur said, “If your television has a built-in satellite tuner, then there will be no need to have a separate set-top box. One can have access to more than 200 channels at the click of the remote.”
Thakur previously sent a letter in December 2022 to Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting TV manufacturers to follow the standards issued by the Bureau of Industrial Standards for built-in satellite tuners. By installing a small antenna at a suitable location, such as on a building’s rooftop or side wall, viewers can receive free-to-air television and radio channels on television sets with built-in satellite tuners.
