KUKU FM expands into video streaming with the launch of KUKU TV

Bengaluru: KUKU FM, has officially entered the video streaming industry with the launch of KUKU TV, India’s first-ever vertical OTT platform dedicated to serialized microdramas. This move marks a significant shift in India’s digital entertainment landscape, catering to the growing mobile-first audience with short, high-intensity episodes optimized for vertical viewing.

With an ambitious vision to become India’s largest vertical microdrama platform within a year, KUKU TV introduces a fresh, fast-paced format—each episode runs for up to 2 minutes, with series spanning 50+ episodes to keep audiences engaged. Available in Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Bangla, the platform is designed for a regional-first approach, with plans to release one new regional microdrama daily starting next month.

Why Vertical Microdramas? The Market Demand

A study by Ericsson reveals that 57% of global video consumption happens on mobile, with 94% of users holding their devices vertically. While social media platforms have leveraged vertical content successfully, no dedicated premium OTT platform existed for this format—until now.

Vinod Kumar Meena, Co-Founder & COO of KUKU, emphasized the shift in content consumption, stating, “Traditional OTTs aren’t built for India’s mobile-first audience, whose attention spans are rapidly shrinking. 90% of Indians consume vertical videos on social media, yet there is no dedicated premium OTT platform for this format. With KUKU TV, we are bringing the next wave of entertainment—high-quality, serialized vertical storytelling, available across Indian languages. Our success with KUKU FM, which boasts 4.5 million active paying subscribers, has given us deep insights into what works for personalized content consumption. We are applying those learnings to revolutionize the video streaming experience.”

Beyond streaming, KUKU TV is a game-changer for India’s creative community. The platform aims to democratize storytelling, providing an opportunity for independent filmmakers, writers, and creators to distribute their work directly to a massive audience. 95% of Indian films and creative talent remain undiscovered, and KUKU TV is addressing this gap by acquiring underrepresented content and collaborating with industry professionals to produce fresh microdramas.

Unlike ad-driven models, KUKU TV follows a pure subscription-based approach, ensuring a seamless viewing experience for audiences.

With 500M+ OTT users in India and 100M+ active paid subscriptions (Ormax Report), the market is ripe for innovation. As India’s internet penetration grows beyond 1 billion users, KUKU TV estimates that the market for paying users of vertical microdramas could reach 300 million.
