Quoting sources, media and social media reported early on June 13, 2022 that Sony Pictures Networks had bagged the domestic TV rights for the Indian Premier League from 2023 to 2027.
Soon after, news about Viacom18 winning the digital rights and the value of the bids emerged. The winning bids were for Rs. 23,575 cr for broadcast and Rs. 20,500 cr for digital, by all accounts.
With a total of 410 games (est.) to be played – 74 per season currently with the option of raising it to 84 or 94 in 2026 and 2027 – this takes the per match cost to Rs. 57.5 cr for TV and Rs. 50 cr for digital.
Quoting BCCI sources, PTI reported late evening on the same day that Disney Star has bagged the TV rights, which is now being picked up by the media..
All through, social media users had a field day even as BCCI remained silent, officially . Here’s a glimpse of what Twitter users had to say.
Apparently. Sony have rights to IPL 2023-27. I don’t know what this means but, fair play.
And now I don’t want to hear anything about the IPL for the next 8 months. Thank you very much. #IPL2023 #IPLMediaRights

I don’t think the money spent on IPL media rights is recoverable by any party in the span of 5 years. #IPLMediaRights

I'll take a punt today.
By the time this new five-year #IPL rights cycle ends in 2027 and the new one begins, we'll potentially be looking at a six to seven month league with at least four more teams.
Will begin in summer, take a monsoon break, resume, and conclude by Diwali.
