Cloudflare, the security, performance, and reliability company helping to build a better Internet, today published its third annual Year in Review, exploring Internet insights, security trends and the trending online services of 2022.
According to Cloudflare data, Google was the most popular service of 2022, beating out Facebook, Apple and TikTok (tied for second), and YouTube (fifth). Facebook was the top social media platform, followed by TikTok. In August, Instagram overtook Twitter to become the third most popular social media platform. There was a surge in worldwide Internet traffic in November due to the FIFA World Cup and Black Friday shopping. The United States was the source of more phishing emails than the next 22 countries combined, and Iran experienced the most Internet blackouts, with 60 observed shutdowns accounting for one-third of all Internet blackouts analyzed by Cloudflare.
“Cloudflare has built one of the world’s largest networks that offers a unique view of Internet traffic and online activity around the world,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “The world continues to rely on the Internet, and we are humbled to have been able to do our part to keep the world connected through protests, conflicts, and natural disasters in 2022. It’s a privilege to help build a better, more transparent and more informed Internet,” he added.
