Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Kreiger have made a comeback in the market with their new venture Artifact — an AI-powered personalised news feed application.
The duo who left Facebook (now Meta) in 2018 owing to tension with the parent company shared the launch announcement on Instagram and Twitter on January 31, 2023.
Announcing the launch of the new app, Systrom tweeted, “It’s been a minute, but @mikeyk and I are back at it with Artifact — a personalised news feed using the latest AI tech. Visit artifact.news to sign up and join the community.”
Artifact, as the name suggests, is a combination of articles, facts and Artificial Intelligence. The app will make use of machine learning to understand user interests.
The app will show a feed with popular articles from a curated list of publishers and when the user taps on a certain article of interest, Artifact will serve them with similar stories in future. Not just this, users can also discuss these articles with their friends. In the words of Systrom, it is basically the ‘TikTok for text.’
Currently, the company is testing two features. One is where a user will see the feed with articles posted by the people they follow, along with their comments; and another is where one can privately discuss articles in their direct-message inbox.
Available for download on both Android and iOS, Artifact opened up its waiting list to the public on Tuesday and is accepting requests from people to be a part of its user base.
