Disney+ Hotstar has gained significant market share in Indian SVOD space while the global streaming giant Netflix has lost significant share of subscribers keeping pace with its global performance.
JustWatch, a streaming guide for OTT market share has released the data for Q3 2022. According to its third quarter data for the Indian OTT (SVOD) markets, Disney+ Hotstar leads with 27 pc share followed by Prime Video with 21 pc share.
The streaming giants Netflix and local player Zee5 managed to get 12 pc and 10 pc share respectively. The smaller local players like Voot, Sony Liv, Jio Cinema and AltBalaji combined together managed 17 pc share.
When compared with the Q1 2021 data of JustWatch, significant change in share of SVOD subscription could be noticed. Market leader Disney+ Hotstar has gained 6 pc from 21 pc share in Q1 2021 to 27 pc share in Q3 2022 while Prime Video has grown by 2 pc share from 19 pc to 21 pc.
However, Netflix has dropped drastically by 6 pc from Q1 2021 market share of 18 pc to 12 pc in Q2 2022. Zee Entertainment owned ZEE5 has posted a moderate growth of 1 pc with its share surging from 9 pc to 10 pc. Jio Cinema has shrunk from 7 pc to 4 pc while Sony LIV lost 1 pc share.
A glance into Market share development in 2022 (January to September) shows Hotstar ahead of the market in terms of growth by gaining +3 pc more of the market in the last three months. The competitors, Prime Video and Zee5 also garner more shares since the beginning of the year, each adding +1 pc. On the other hand, global giant Netflix struggles to get a hold of its shares, losing the most at -2 pc.
The Indian OTT (SVOD) market share in Q1 2021 showed the top three streaming services in India make up 58 pc of the market, and they were in close competition. However in Q3 2022, the eco system has witnessed remarkable changes with Market Share gaps widening between the top OTT players in Indian OTT space. In the present scenario, top 4 players together Disney+ Hotstar, Prime Video, Netflix and ZEE5 alone command a combined market share of 70% while the rest is shared by ATLBalaji, Jio Cinema and others.
