As the year 2023 drew to a close, Indians took to their food delivery apps to ring in the celebrations. According to Zomato, it fulfilled nearly as many orders on New Year’s Eve 2023 as the combined total of orders from New Year’s Eves 2015 through 2020. Competitor Swiggy saw a similar trend for food deliveries and Instamart orders.
“The orders per minute (OPM) on Swiggy instamart is the highest we have seen so far. It’s surpassed our previous high during the WC Finals by 1.6x. Swiggy instamart is seeing a 10x increase in searches for tonic water, cocktail mixer and glasses. India is partying like never before to ring in ‘2024,” Rohit Kapoor, CEO, Swiggy food marketplace, said in a series of posts on microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter).
Zomato co-founder Deepinder Goyal shared some interesting order facts on his X account. “Really want to attend the party in Kolkata – where someone just ordered 125 items in a single order,” he tweeted. A followup tweet said, “8422 orders were placed at 8:06 pm – that’s 140 orders every second.”
Both apps reported that the most popular food order for the night was Biryani, while Bangalore had the most events booked and tables reserved on Zomato.
Other insights shared by Swiggy showed Instamart witnessed strong demand for nimbu and partysmart pills, more than 500 packs of Uno were ordered on the eve of New Years, over 22,000 users ordered Amul buttermilk, while condom orders peaked at 1722 condoms per hour. Delhi spent Rs 16 lakh on chips and mixers, and not to be forgotten, furry friends were in for a treat as 1220 pedigree packets were ordered on NYE.
