The day kicked off with policy roundtable discussions, where GDAI board members, gaming company CEOs, and key government representatives brainstormed initiatives essential for the sector’s development. Notable gaming companies such as Nazara Technologies, Playsimple, Super Gaming, Nodwin Gaming, and Lakshya Digital were part of these high-level conversations.
Policy Focus: Gaming Education and Talent Development
Building on day one’s momentum, Neerja Sekhar, Special Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), echoed the central government’s support for gaming education. She expressed enthusiasm for establishing a premier game development school and incorporating gaming courses in India’s top tech, design, and arts colleges. A detailed project report will be presented to the central government to address the growing demand for skilled talent in game design and development.
The discussions also featured active engagement from the state governments of Tamil Nadu and Telangana, which proposed the establishment of regional Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics (AVGC) sector. These CoEs would serve as hubs for research, training, and development in game design and interactive media, helping to cultivate local talent and innovation.
MoUs and Incubator White Paper Launch
In a major step forward, IGDC 2024 saw the signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between GDAI and various state governments, including Rajasthan and Sikkim, aimed at creating a more supportive environment for gaming companies. Additionally, the Game Developer Association of India (GDAI) unveiled the Incubator White Paper, which was released jointly by Dr. Palanivel Thiagarajan, Tamil Nadu IT Minister, and Smt. Neerja Sekhar, Special Secretary, MIB. The white paper proposes a national framework for establishing gaming incubators, aimed at fostering intellectual property (IP) development and supporting early-stage gaming startups across India.
State Competition and Collaboration: Telangana vs Tamil Nadu
Both Telangana and Tamil Nadu showcased their commitment to building thriving gaming ecosystems. The IT Ministers from both states emphasized the importance of competition and collaboration in attracting global gaming companies and local talent. They outlined strategies to leverage regional infrastructure, supportive policies, and talent development programs to make their states the preferred destinations for gaming studios.
The Road Ahead: A Unified Approach to Policy and Innovation
The discussions at IGDC 2024 underscored the need for a coordinated, cross-ministry approach to support the gaming sector’s growth. Government efforts, including collaborations with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Commerce, are focused on aligning policy measures to drive innovation and position India as a key player in the global gaming market.
As the gaming industry continues to grow in India, the collaboration between state governments, central ministries, and the private sector is set to unlock immense opportunities, creating jobs, fostering innovation, and establishing India as a hub for gaming development and interactive entertainment.
