Gurugram: The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has launched a pivotal document titled “Best Practices for Affiliate Marketing in India” at the India Affiliate Summit (IAS) 2024, the country’s premier annual conference for affiliate marketing professionals. The launch marks a significant step in the maturation of the affiliate marketing sector, which has witnessed impressive growth and is projected to surpass $420 million in spending by 2025.
As India ranks among the world’s top 10 affiliate marketing markets, IAMAI’s new guidelines come at a crucial time. With affiliate marketing spending currently valued at approximately $331 million, the industry is on a rapid growth trajectory. The document aims to establish a set of best practices to ensure transparency, ethical conduct, and operational efficiency, helping to guide the industry through its next phase of expansion.
The “Best Practices for Affiliate Marketing in India” provides a comprehensive framework to address critical challenges within the ecosystem, including unclear contracts, undisclosed terms, and performance optimization. By offering clear guidelines, IAMAI seeks to encourage ethical behavior, promote transparency, and build stronger trust among advertisers, affiliates, and consumers.
Key Objectives of the Document:
Standardization of Industry Practices: Establishing uniform ethical, transparent, and effective campaign standards across the affiliate marketing ecosystem.
Trust Building: Strengthening relationships between advertisers, affiliates, and consumers through improved transparency and compliance.
Regulatory Compliance: Providing guidance on navigating India’s complex regulatory landscape and ensuring legal adherence in affiliate marketing campaigns.
Performance and KPI Optimization: Offering best practices for tracking performance and key performance indicators (KPIs) to maximize campaign effectiveness.
Tackling Common Industry Challenges: Addressing issues such as ambiguous contracts and undisclosed terms that often lead to disputes within the sector.
The document also highlights various types of affiliate marketing, including Cost Per View (CPV), Cost Per Lead (CPL), Cost Per Sale (CPS), and Cost Per Install (CPI), offering detailed guidelines for each model. A particular focus is placed on the importance of maintaining transparency and ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
The launch of the document follows the formation of a taskforce in October 2023, which included nine leading companies from the affiliate marketing space. Industry giants such as Affle, Admitad, Grabon, mFilterIt, Optimise, Tyroo, Valueleaf, and vCommission played a pivotal role in drafting the guidelines, ensuring that the document reflects the collective input of the affiliate marketing ecosystem’s foremost experts.
Commenting on the launch, an IAMAI spokesperson said, “India’s affiliate marketing industry is poised for explosive growth. As the market expands, it is crucial to establish clear guidelines that ensure ethical conduct and foster trust across the entire ecosystem. Our Best Practices for Affiliate Marketing document will serve as a roadmap to help businesses navigate the complexities of this sector while driving greater transparency and value.”
With India’s digital ecosystem rapidly evolving, driven by increasing mobile penetration, robust digital infrastructure, and the ongoing success of initiatives like Digital India, affiliate marketing is set to play an increasingly important role in the country’s business landscape. The IAMAI’s guidelines are expected to support this growth and position India as a global leader in affiliate marketing innovation and standards.
