Global FMCG giant Procter & Gamble has issued a voluntary product recall to some dry conditioner and shampoo sprays sold in the United States and Canada from its Pantene and Herbal Essences brand last week. The recall is done due to the presence of the cancer-causing chemical – benzene. The current recall is in addition to the earlier discontinuation of aerosol dry shampoo products from Old Spice and Hair Food, which was also due to the presence of benzene that was detected in some products.
The FMCG giant did not reveal the number of recalled products, which were distributed through retail and online outlets, but they claimed that the recalled products represented less than 1% of its overall hair care product portfolio.
The company also said it had not received any reports of adverse events related to the recall, but added that daily exposure to the level of benzene detected in the products would not be expected to cause negative health consequences.
