The Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away on February 6 at the age of 92. She left behind her a legacy of tens of thousands of songs in around 36 Indian languages. In her songs generations of 7 decades found solace and expression of their umpteen number of emotions.
Before becoming the most successful singer and ruling the Indian film industry, Lata Mangeshkar started her career in movies as an actor in supporting roles and made her acting debut with the Marathi movie Pahili. In her career spanned over seven decades, Lata Mangeshkar has endorsed only one brand- she acted in the advertisement for Glycodin- the cough syrup brand. The ad which was shot by veteran Indian film director Govind Nihalani also featured legends like Bismillah Khan and Bhimsen Joshi. Latha Mangeshkar who is always known for the ‘moonlight in her throat’ was embarrassed by the attention and said that this is the first and last commercial I do.
Tribute pours in on social media
People from all walks of life around the world paid homage to the Melody queen on social media platforms by sharing her photographs and clips of her songs and describing her demise as the ‘End of an Era’.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter, “I am anguished beyond words. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture.”
