VML Enterprise Solutions has released comprehensive new research across eight global markets, revealing persistent disconnects between digital transformation investments and tangible business impact. Despite billions spent globally, 37% of digital transformation projects still fail to meet their objectives—signaling an urgent need to rethink execution strategies.
The report, which surveyed 4,000 senior business leaders across the US, UK, China, Mexico, India, Germany, Netherlands, and Brazil, highlights that while digital transformation is widely accepted as a business imperative, execution gaps remain around leadership vision, customer alignment, technology integration, and change management.
A striking 64% of transformation projects begin without a clear roadmap, and 76% of respondents admit their efforts often miss the mark with customer needs—frequently driven more by internal agendas than by external value.
“Digital transformation is no longer about shiny new technologies—it’s about navigating continuous change, embracing adaptability, and putting people and customers at the core,” said Jeff Geheb, CEO, VML Enterprise Solutions. “The organizations succeeding today are the ones that take a bold, integrated, and human-centered approach to transformation.”
Key Findings:
-
Vision without clarity leads to drift: 64% of projects launch without a well-defined strategy or end goal, increasing the risk of misalignment and wasted investment.
-
Customer needs often sidelined: 76% say transformation projects fail to reflect evolving customer demands, and 68% believe these efforts are too internally focused.
-
Legacy systems remain a barrier: 69% report that outdated technologies restrict transformation efforts. In contrast, 81% say cloud engineering has fundamentally shifted how they approach change.
-
AI is reshaping priorities: 77% have already adjusted their transformation strategies due to AI, and 78% believe AI will improve their transformation capabilities. AI expertise is now one of the most in-demand skills among transformation partners.
-
Data gaps hinder transformation maturity: 62% say data silos obstruct progress, and 59% admit their data management practices aren’t robust enough to support advanced tech initiatives like AI and automation.
-
People and change are essential: 83% say success hinges as much on people as on technology. Yet, 74% of project failures are attributed to poor change management, underlining the need for stronger communication, upskilling, and cross-functional alignment.
Regional Perspective: APAC and Beyond
“In APAC’s hyper-dynamic digital economies, success depends on a unified transformation mindset—one that combines innovation with operational precision,” said Symon Hammacott, Chief Experience Officer, VML Asia Pacific.
“The report calls on APAC businesses to bridge the short-term execution focus with long-term strategic vision. The ability to rapidly iterate, deeply understand customer journeys, and scale transformation through data and cloud agility will define market leaders.”
A Call to Action: Clarity, Courage, and Coordination
VML’s research underscores that digital transformation must evolve from isolated tech upgrades to comprehensive, coordinated programs that blend leadership, culture, data, and customer obsession.
“Transformation is a living process,” added Jeff Geheb. “With 74% of leaders reporting shifting objectives mid-journey and 67% experiencing scope creep, we must accept that fluidity is the norm—not the exception. The winners will be those who combine strategic clarity with the agility to evolve as technology and customer expectations do.”
By prioritizing people, refining processes, and aligning every initiative around customer impact, businesses can unlock the true potential of digital transformation—and ensure that investments deliver enduring value.
