New Delhi: CNN-News18 is honoring the indomitable spirit of women with a unique series ‘March on Women!’ during the entire month of March. The second episode in the series has Anuradha Sen Gupta in discussion with National Award winning actress Konkona Sensharma, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Paromita Vohra and popular stand-up comedian Aditi Mittal.
‘March on Women!’ features guests from different fields to discuss many forms of discrimination faced by women in society and address issues of opportunity for women and the barriers they still need to break. In this episode, while actress Konkona Sensharma advocates about films with women-centric concepts, filmmaker Paromita compares love with feminism. From how it is portrayed in films to life in general, these exemplary women talk about the notion and state of feminism today in India.
On films, Konkona says, “I am really fed up of the fact that these kind of films (Lipstick Under My Burkha) are banned and so many other kind of films are not. No films should be banned at all. I think the CBFC should just give a certificate. It’s important that we watch all kinds of films and it’s important that we watch films where women talk about themselves.”
Documentary filmmaker Paromita Vohra says, “I don’t know what the difference between feminism and love is- they are a part and parcel of the same idea. I always thought that love is a way in which we work out how to be different, how to be with people who are different, how people come to agreements; actually is via love. Because love only doesn’t go by rules, it allows for kind of open-endedness; and feminism is also the same thing, it sort of looks at life as a philosophical pursuit, of change in the way power functions- unsaid power functions. The biggest question was- why do people say we are not feminists, they say that because they feel they will lose love. So the question is can you be a feminist and have love and can feminists imagine love in a different way?”
CNN-News18 to air ‘March on Women’ on Saturday, 18th March @ 12:30PM & 7:30PM and Sunday, 19th March @ 1:30PM & 8:30PM
