Apple has acquired the rights to develop an international drama series based on Gregory David Robert’s best-selling novel Shantaram, which has been published in 39 languages in 42 territories worldwide and sold 6 million copies.
Apple said it scored the rights for the book in a “competitive situation.” Anonymous Content and Paramount Television are producing.
The series will be written and executive produced by Eric Warren Singer (American Hustle) and executive produced by David Manson (Ozark, Bloodline, House of Cards), Steve Golin (Spotlight, The Revenant, 13 Reasons Why) and Nicole Clemens for Anonymous Content, alongside Andrea Barron.
Shantaram tells the story of Lin, a man on the run from an Australian prison looking to get lost in the city of Bombay. Cut off from family and friends by distance and fate, he finds a new life in the slums, bars and underworld of India. The novel is an exploration of love, forgiveness and courage on the long road to redemption.
