Mumbai: The Launch campaign of the eighth season of popular TV game show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 8’, promises to touch people’s hearts with the stories of community bonding, social issues, including racial discrimination and communal discord, in the country.
The channel had aired the first promo showing a female contestant from the northeast. Amitabh asks her to which country does the city of Kohima belong. But instead of answering the simple question, she decides to take the ‘audience poll’ lifeline, in which the highest percent goes to India among the other options.
Amitabh says the answer is something everyone knows, to which the girl replies: “Yes Sir, everyone knows about it but how many believe it?”
The promo has the message against the social discrimination of people from North-eastern states in the other parts of the country including the Capital New Delhi which was liked very much by the audience of all walks.
However, this didn’t go well with a senior government official. He filed a complaint with the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) against the promo, Sources within the Council told us that the trailer irked the senior government official, who found it to be offensive and embarrassing for the government. “The official, in his complaint, said that the promo could create controversies and the question about “Kohima” was in extremely bad taste, and requested the Council to ask the channel to discontinue the promo,” the source added.
Based on this complaint, the full promo was screened in a BCCC meeting held on July 18, where Council members viewed it and found nothing objectionable in it. they observed that “the trailer was highlighting the problem that northeastern people face, and is a step in the right direction. In fact, at a time when crimes against the community are on the rise, the promo was seen as emphasising the issue of alienation of the northeastern community, and making people aware of it,”
TV watchdog dismissed the Govt officials complaint demanding it be taken off air.
The channel’s second promo that covering the “Hindu Muslim issue” and third promo with touching “story of an elderly couple” was also critically acclaimed by the viewers.
‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 8’ will be launched in the middle of August after Big B’s current running fiction show ‘Yudh’ gets over.
