The media industry is a fascinating and dynamic realm, one that has evolved over the years, shaped by the brilliance of certain individuals who have redefined its very essence. Among these trailblazers, two names stand tall: Sri Pradeep Guha, the “Ultimate God of Advertising,” and, alongside him, the brilliant, suave, and ever-stylish Dr. Bhaskar Das—whom I lovingly refer to as the “Ultimate Guru of Advertising.”
For over four decades, both of these legends have redefined Indian media and influenced the lives of countless media professionals, including my own. Dr. Bhaskar Das, or BD as we fondly called him, was much more than a mentor. He was a maverick, a master storyteller, an astute academic, a witty senior, and a visionary leader. His influence on the industry was as rare and precious as the Kohinoor—priceless, shining, surreal, and utterly unique.
Anyone who had the privilege of working with BD, or even knowing him as an acquaintance, was touched by his presence. His mark was undeniable, and his impact profound. BD was an Acharya to many—those lucky enough to be in close proximity to him in Mumbai became his Arjuns, benefiting directly from his wisdom and guidance. For those of us who worked from afar, we were still his Ekalavyas, learning from him at every opportunity. Whether near or far, BD’s tutelage was always felt.
BD’s sessions on co-creation, solution selling, innovation, and creativity were nothing short of transformative. They weren’t just lectures; they were lessons for life. Every interaction with BD was an experience—an episode filled with new insights, exciting revelations, and innovative thinking. The world of media and entertainment owes much of its modern evolution to BD’s teachings, and I consider myself fortunate to be one of his disciples.
The storyteller, co-creator, and leader I am today is a product of his mentorship. BD’s words continue to echo in my mind, especially when I left BCCL. His promise to always be there for me, wherever I was, resonated deeply. And true to his word, he was always there to guide and mentor me, no matter the distance.
While BD was rational and strategic in business, he was equally spiritual in life. He taught me, through deep conversations about spirituality, about the impermanence of permanence. Yet, as much as he imparted wisdom on navigating the impermanence of life, I never once imagined I would be writing a tribute to my beloved boss and mentor. And yet, here I am, penning these words with a heavy heart.
BD’s legacy is eternal. His story will live on in the people he helped, mentored, and inspired—certainly in me. His guidance, lessons, and spirit will continue to shape the media industry for generations to come. I can proudly say I lived and worked under his mentorship during the greatest era of media leadership.
Thank you, Boss, for everything. You will always be remembered, and your impact will live on forever in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know you. Rest in peace, BD. Your story will never fade.
