It’s often said that some people leave a mark on your life that stays with you long after they’re gone. Bhaskar Das, or BD as we all affectionately called him, was one of those extraordinary individuals who left an indelible impression on everyone who had the privilege of crossing his path.
I first met Bhaskar when I joined Brand Capital at Times Group. His legend preceded him, and the stories about him created an aura that was both intimidating and inspiring. When I first shook his hand, I remember feeling a deep sense of awe—not just because of his incredible accomplishments, but because of his warmth and humility. BD had a way of making you feel like the most important person in the room, and yet, he was constantly learning, evolving, and seeking new perspectives.
His insatiable curiosity was one of the things that struck me the most. He was a sponge—absorbing knowledge, experiences, and insights from anyone and everyone. It didn’t matter where the wisdom came from; BD was always open to it. I remember him telling me once, “Be a student for life.” That was his philosophy, and it shaped the way I viewed my own career and approach to learning. No matter where we were in the world or what challenge we faced, BD never lost that drive to learn, grow, and push the boundaries of what was possible.
But what truly set Bhaskar apart was his energy. The moment he walked into a room, the atmosphere changed. His presence lit up the space, and his humor—often dry and razor-sharp—could lift even the most difficult situations. I saw him handle countless high-pressure moments with such calm and wit that it made you wonder if he had the ability to puncture any balloon of stress with just a smile or a quick remark. BD had this gift of turning the most intense moments into something light, teaching all of us that humor could be the ultimate antidote to pressure.
His wit was as unmatched as his ability to shift the narrative of a conversation or a deal. I’ll never forget one trip we took to Hyderabad for a crucial meeting with a client. What we had prepared for was a 100-crore deal, but once the meeting began, BD—true to form—threw a curveball that changed everything. He boldly declared that the potential for this partnership wasn’t 100 crores—it was a staggering 1000 crores. The room was stunned for a moment, but that simple shift in perspective ignited a spark in the client’s interest. The impact was immediate and profound—what started as a tentative discussion turned into a business opportunity that had 10 times the potential. That was Bhaskar. He saw possibilities where others saw limits.
I could go on recounting countless moments of brilliance, humor, and wisdom that BD imparted, but what stands out most is the way he made those around him better. He taught us all to be fearless in our pursuit of growth, to approach life with a sense of curiosity, and to remember that no matter where you are in your journey, you should always remain a student.
As we celebrate his life and legacy, I encourage everyone who had the privilege of knowing him to carry that lesson with us. Be a student for life. Never stop learning, growing, and reaching for the next big challenge.
Bhaskar Das was a one-of-a-kind leader, mentor, and friend. We are all better for having known him, and his memory will live on in the lessons he imparted and the energy he brought into every room.
May his soul rest in peace.
