Mumbai: Dr. Bhaskar Das, a towering figure in India’s media and advertising industry, passed away earlier today after battling cancer. His passing marks the end of an era defined by visionary leadership, transformative impact, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Dr. Das managed to brave the life threatening disease in the early round however he succumbed in the second round. He was hospitalized in critical condition for the past two weeks at Mumbai.
With a remarkable career spanning over four decades, Dr. Das made a profound impact on the media landscape. He began his journey in 1980 as a management trainee at BCCL (Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd.), the parent company of The Times of India and The Economic Times. Rising through the ranks, he played a pivotal role in driving the company’s turnover from ₹1,560 crore to an impressive ₹4,200 crore during his six-year tenure as President.
Dr. Das held leadership roles at top media organizations, including Zee Media, DB Corp, and Republic TV. Known for his innovative thinking, colleagues often referred to him as an “insight provocateur” and a catalyst for change. He fostered an environment of collaboration and innovation, consistently creating opportunities for growth and excellence within his teams.
Beyond his corporate accomplishments, Dr. Das was deeply passionate about education and mentorship. He dedicated over 800 hours to speaking engagements at prestigious institutions such as Harvard Business School, The Wharton School, MIT, IIMs, MICA, and ISB. As a professor at S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), he was instrumental in shaping thought leadership and enhancing the institute’s brand. His mentorship extended to MICA, Ahmedabad, where he focused on the Media & Entertainment and Sports sectors.
Dr. Das’s contributions to academia and industry forums reflected his belief in nurturing the next generation of leaders. His insights on media, leadership, and business strategy were widely sought after, and his influence reached far beyond the boardroom.
