New Delhi: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned Netflix India’s head of content on September 3 regarding the web series IC-814 – The Kandahar Hijack. The series, created by Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Shrivastava, has sparked controversy for its portrayal of the hijackers with Hindu names, raising concerns among political figures.
BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar criticized the series, noting the hijackers were Pakistani terrorists, not Indians. Amit Malviya, BJP’s IT cell chief, warned that such depictions could mislead future generations and undermine India’s security.
The six-episode drama recounts the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814, which was taken over by hijackers posing as passengers. The ordeal ended after the Indian government released three militants in exchange for the hostages. The series features actors including Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapur, and the hijackers’ real names were Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim, and Shakir.
