New Delhi: The Government of India, after extensive public consultations with relevant stakeholders, notified the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (“IT Rules, 2021”) on February 25, 2021. These rules, designed to enhance accountability and promote a safer online environment, have since undergone amendments on October 28, 2022, and April 6, 2023.
The IT Rules, 2021 impose specific legal obligations on intermediaries, including significant social media intermediaries, ensuring their accountability in maintaining a safe and trusted internet.
From the inception of the Grievance Appellate Committees on March 1, 2023, until June 30, 2024, the number of cases filed and disposed of are as follows:
– Cases filed: 1,065
– Cases disposed of: 937
