We’re often reminded to keep the child within us alive, and while that is sage advice, there’s also the undeniable reality that as children, we often eagerly anticipate growing up. At the tender age of 15, I was gifted magazines by my father, each page adorned with images of models like Cindy Crawford, stunningly draped in the latest fashion trends. Mesmerized by their outfits and the aura they exuded; I felt a spark igniting within me—a fervent desire to become a woman who not only wore those exquisite silhouettes but crafted them with her own hands. And so began the journey of this 15-year-old guided by that woman who dwelled within her, shaping every decision and aspiration she dared to have.
In my youthful days, I found myself sketching garments during my spare moments, envisioning sleek and slender models adorned in my creations. Patterns intricately drawn on silhouettes, colors carefully chosen, each stroke of my pencil infused with passion and creativity. Every opportunity to step out became a canvas for experimentation, as I tirelessly explored various styles and combinations to curate my unique fashion statement. In the mirror, I saw this woman who was confident and did not hesitate to experiment with styles and colors. During my college years, luminaries like Cindy Lauper and Madonna continued to inspire me. Encouraged by my principal, who recognized my potential and floated the idea of pursuing a Ph.D. in costumes—a testament to the faith she and others had in my abilities. Collaborating with Jeanne Naoroji, a seasoned choreographer, provided me with a platform to express my creativity, styling garments and accessories for captivating showcases on the ramp. These experiences honed my skills in visualizing designs, understanding structures, and harmonizing color schemes—a crucial foundation for what lay ahead. However, it was during my tenure as a costume designer for films that I encountered my most profound mentor—the late Sridevi. Immersed in the world of cinema, she imparted invaluable lessons on colortheory, visual aesthetics, and the intricacies of fabric selection and embroidery. Her guidance not only elevated my craft but instilled in me a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of costumes on the silver screen.
Amidst the multitude of women who inspired and guided me, one stands above all. And it is with utmost humility, I attribute my journey to the woman who kindled the fire within the 15-year-old version of myself—the woman who dared to dream and relentlessly pursued her passion while taking me along for the ride. She epitomized resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in the possibility of turning dreams into reality. Her unwavering support, both in moments of triumph and adversity, served as a guiding light, illuminating the path to my true calling. Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the profound impact one person can have on shaping our destinies. To this extraordinary woman, whose influence transcends time and space, I offer my deepest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation. I am glad that I kept this woman alive as a 15-year-old.”
