Around 66 pc of respondents are diligent budget planners for their festival expenses, according to a survey by Public App. The survey saw over 8.7 lakh responses and offers information on various aspects of festive celebrations, from budgeting and shopping to dining and travel, as well as gifting trends.
Kerala has the lowest percentage of budget planners at 40 pc, while Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana had the highest at 71 pc, 70 pc, and 74 pc, respectively. In terms of expenditure plans, about 54 pc respondents plan to increase or maintain their spending compared with last year with Karnataka (64 pc), Odisha (64 pc), and Andhra Pradesh (59 pc) having the highest percentages of respondents saying so.
The survey also revealed that 52 pc of the respondents spend on house cleaning and whitewash every year around Diwali, 16 pc spend on major appliances, 14 pc on renovations and home improvements, 10 pc on gold and jewellery, and 7 pc on electronics.
For this year’s purchases during the Diwali season, of the total respondents, 31 pc expressed keen interest in purchasing apparel and clothing with the highest being in Tamil Nadu at 59 pc and Gujarat at 47 pc. Approximately 13 pc of respondents also showed inclination towards acquiring big-ticket items such as real estate or automobiles.
A significant 52 pc favoured local markets as their primary shopping destination, while 24 pc opted for online marketplaces. It’s interesting to note that Kerala deviated from the norm, with only 26 pc preferring local markets and a majority 38 pc opting for online shopping.
68 pc of respondents admitted that sale advertisements significantly influence their festive shopping decisions. Interestingly, this trend was consistent across all states, with the majority acknowledging the impact of sale advertisements. 40 pc of the respondents mentioned that they find better offers online.
