CNN-News18 has issued a statement backed by BARC data to claim that it has maintained its leadership position in the English TV news genre with an average viewership share of over 35 pc for more than a year now, across the 2+ and 15+ audience segments.
The war over ratings claims had seen competition question the relevance of the 2+ audience for the news genre.
CNN-News18 said it captured 35.3 pc market share as against Republic TV’s 29.6 pc share and 23.5 pc market share of Times Now (BARC | Market: India | TG: 2+ | Period: AVG Wk 16’22 – 29’23 | 8 Channels considered | Market share pc).

The statement added that in the 15+ TG, considered as the core segment by advertisers for media planning, CNN-News18 has maintained its top position by capturing 34.6 pc market share. This is ahead of Republic TV’s 30.4 pc share and Times Now’s 22.5 pc, the statement adde, again quoting BARC data (Market: India | TG: 15+ | Period: AVG Wk 16’22 – 29’23 | 8 Channels considered | Market share pc).

Avinash Kaul, CEO (Broadcast), Network18 Group, said, “The continued dominance of CNN-News18 in the robust All India 15+ or 2+ TG indicates the strength of the brand and the value it delivers to its advertisers. By convenient slicing and dicing of viewership data on thin slivers, the competition cannot mislead advertisers.”
The statement added that on the digital front, CNN-News18 has captured 1.4 billion views on YouTube, surpassing Times Now which had 795 million views (Source: Socialblade | Period: Aug’22-July’23). On Facebook, CNN-News18 claims 787 million views as compared to 731 million of Times Now (Source: Crowdtangle | Period: Aug’22-July’23).
