The Supreme Court expressed its concerns about the lack of effective self-regulation through the mechanism set up by the News Broadcasters and Digital Association (NBDA, formerly News Broadcasters Association).
NBDA’s News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority’s (NBSA) penalty of Rs.1 lakh was prescribed in 2008, noted the judges, reported LiveLaw.in. The quantum of penalty should be proportionate to the profit earned from the show, it reported CJI DY Chandrachud as saying..
The bench led by the CJI was hearing a plea filed by the NBDA challenging critical observations made by the Bombay High Court against its self-regulatory mechanism. The High Court judgement was from early 2021, on a batch of PILs against the media trial following actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
Final orders are yet to be passed in the current case.
