#TheKeralaStory
Informed voices opine that while the subject of religious conversion provided a powerful opportunity for the makers, it has been squandered by making it an unapologetic propaganda vehicle. Could it have been possible to create a layered film that would have perhaps still been criticised of driving an agenda with its theme, but appreciated for its cinematic value? The timing and political climate add to the alluded intent of this film. I am yet to see The Kerala Story. But after reading the in-depth review by Film Companion’s @dpanjana and other balanced viewpoints, and seeing the right wing social media army’s brazen attempts to promote it, I perhaps won’t.

"By the time we are halfway through The Kerala Story, it is hard to decide who is more brainwashed – the protagonist or the makers of this insidious film…The writing is consistently cringeworthy…The script..an act of cinematic terror." https://t.co/bGLE2nLyqm

“Sen's film exploits the trauma of a few real victims and survivors with the ruthlessness of a predator. Actual incidents are twisted and manipulated – it's "cinematic liberty", according to Sen – to put forward a blatantly sexist and Islamophobic agenda.” https://t.co/3h9QXhgxut

#KarnatakaElections
The election fever is upon us. In all its glory and ugliness. Expect this to continue all the way up to 2024. There will be plenty of views for, against, and against those who speak for, in a cycle of content that can be entertaining if you manage to detach yourself from the situation. The Karnataka election being the first in the series is perhaps going to set the tone for the months ahead. Its importance is abundantly evident from the time invested by top leaders in the state. Wishing peace during the elections and better conditions in its aftermath for Karnataka and its beautiful people.

#ManipurViolence
The unthinkable is happening in the North East and its tremors are being felt all over. We saw a few reportedly try to stop the screening of The Kerala Story at a Chennai multiplex. What is happening in Manipur is not cinema or propaganda. It is far more dangerous. The debates are unmistakably infused with the religions of the feuding groups, as one would expect. But there are also the silver linings, like women of one group protecting those of the other from their own mob. There is hope.

#GujaratTitans
They are on a roll, the GT franchise. The team’s unique composition and consistent away performances have come in for praise. Will they go all the way again? Methinks while that is possibly the trend from this edition, a twist may be on the cards basis past editions. Your guess is as good as mine.

#MahsaAmini
The protests continue as do the executions. I have received some feedback specific to the ongoing inclusion of the #IranRevolution in this column. The contention is that there is nothing “new” in the content every week. Perhaps one has a point. It is in its quest for breaking news that the news media forgot about the value of pursuing a story. This column will follow what’s happening in Iran until there are voices from the ground on executions and oppression.
