#AdaniEnterprises
Unfortunately for Adani Enterprises, it is still in the news. Cancellation of a fully subscribed (with a little help from fellow industrialists) follow-on public offer – to ‘insulate investors’ – hasn’t helped. S&P has announced that Adani Enterprises will be off the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, effective 7 February, following “Media & Stakeholder Analysis triggered by allegations of stock manipulation and accounting fraud.” This will go down as a case study on how (or how not) to handle such a crisis from a communications point of view not just for Adani, but also SEBI, LIC and several others. As most news involving the high and mighty, it has also sparked memes and jokes online. Do not read on if your national pride is fragile.

State-controlled LIC is spending about 300 crores as an anchor investor in a $2.5 billion new share sale by Adani Enterprises Ltd, even as LIC loses 20K Crs on it’s Adani investments. This is our money. The Directors of LIC must be brought to accounthttps://t.co/wADcb7QdSD

#Budget2023
Satish Acharya nails one yet again that should make everyone smile even while reading about a budget that gave us little to smile about. Supposedly good news on infra, railway and some other fronts and an incentive (reduced surcharge) to encourage the super rich to choose the new regime. For a lay middle class person assimilating the information through media reports, this seems to be a thanda thanda budget that’s cool in parts. The most impactful of the announcements for me was on putting an end to manual scavenging. Even if lives are not lost, it has to stop to ensure human dignity and demonstrate equality.

There can be no excuse for forcing people to live and work in such danger and indignity. This terrible practice should have ended a long time ago. Absolutely essential that the law to prevent #ManualScavenging is implemented in both letter and spirit. –Sg #Budget2023 https://t.co/DnyOJHR0TJ

#BorderGavaskarTrophy
There is of course the IndVsPak high, but there is also something special about an IndVsAus cricket series, especially of the Test variety. As Andrew McGlashan summarises in his ESPN CricInfo curtain raiser: “Dramatic, unpredictable, controversial – for over two decades now, the Border-Gavaskar trophy has been one of cricket’s great rivalries.” A fantastic piece that celebrates the cricket rivalry, recounts unforgettable matches and performances, and sets us up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 starting 9th February. The five-day fare will keep cricket lovers engrossed for over a month, across four matches.
Over the last two decades, the rivalry has grown into one of the dominant duels in the game #INDvAUShttps://t.co/VGSPrhgjtQ

#SiddiqueKappan
An excellent piece by Puja Awasthi of The Week spotlights the journalist from Uttar Pradesh who furnished the bail bond for jailed fellow journalist Siddique Kappan’s release. The latter’s walking out only after 850-odd days in jail has been criticised. But there are some who point out that not everyone is even this ‘lucky’. Some critics of government/s including journalists will be tempted to steer clear of the ruling establishment/s lest they meet the same fate. Elsewhere, TOI’s Pinaki Chakraborty speaks with former vice-chancellor of the University of Lucknow Roop Rekha Verma, a veteran crusader for justice and social equality, who stood surety for Kappan. It is people like her who ensure that a semblance of justice remains
Well-known names in the legal and larger fraternity were scared to furnish bonds for him for fear of how the state government might react.

So this has become the anchor for the column. And why not? As long as the #IranProtests continue, we should keep a watch and lend a voice. A young man and woman, aged 22 and 21, have been sentenced to spend over 10 years in jail for dancing as part of the ongoing #WomanLifeFreedom revolution. The ruling regime might benefit from some fresh air on a stroll along Bandra bandstand.
For the crime of dancing, these two young Iranians have been sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison.#AstiyazhHaghighi 21 & #AmirMohammadAhmadi,
22 danced in the streets in support of #WomanLifeFreedom revolution in Iran.

I strongly support the Biden Administration’s newly-announced sanctions against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the Iranian regime’s right hand in oppression. “Woman, Life, Freedom” is not just a chant—it’s a call to action. #MahsaAmini pic.twitter.com/x96c5TM4o1
