One of the most regrettable years in Indian history was 1984, when one community became the object of hate after PM Indira Gandhi’s assassination. Jogi, which dropped on Netflix on 16 September, is a story that takes us back to Delhi in the aftermath of her death.
News18’s Gautaman Bhaskaran writes: “Ali Abbas Zafar’s Jogi – with Diljit Dosanjh playing the titular role – takes a segment out of the bloody riots to give us an emotion-driven story of how three friends from different faiths help dozens of Sikhs escape Delhi, before order was restored by the Indian Army.”
The article says the film is an honest depiction of the brutality Sikhs suffered in 1984.
Abhimanyu Mathur of Hindustan Times says: “If there is any doubt about Diljit Dosanjh’s acting skills, Jogi should clear them once and for all. The singer-turned-actor delivers one of the best onscreen performances by a Bollywood leading man in recent times, bringing out vulnerability rarely seen in commercial Hindi cinema.”
Archika Khurana writes in her review for The Times of India: “What makes this film unique is the concept that it focuses on courage, friendship, humanity, tragedy, and hope. This 116-minute drama is both moving and captivating. But, the film’s best moments are fuelled by Diljit Dosanjh’s towering performance.”
