There was sporting action this week given the Chess Olympiad underway in Chennai and Indian athletes’ wins at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. With the latter set to come to a close on 8th August, the country’s tally of six golds, seven silvers and seven bronze medals as on 4th August is way behind its 2018 haul of 26 Golds, 20 Silvers and 20 Bronze medals. But there is still hope in several events.
Meantime, the #India75 fever is catching on as we move closer to 15th August. Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev is reminding (social media) followers about some freedom fighters we may not have heard of like Jatindra Das and Maveeran Alugumuthu and their contributions. The ‘Save Soil’ logo in the communication tells that it is a brand by itself today.
Aamir Khan is in timelines again, for upcoming release Lal Singh Chadda. The trolls seem to be ensuring that the movie gets visibility, even while calling for a boycott of the film.
Elsewhere, the data protection bill’s withdrawal draws mixed reactions and expectations. There are at least two sides to every story.
Here’s how these major events of the week unfolded on Twitter.

After 63 days of fasting #JatindraDas died in Lahore Jail fighting for better treatment of Indian prisoners. He inspired thousands to stand against the oppressive British rule. It is time we give him due recognition for his role in the freedom struggle.-Sg #India75 #AmritMahotsav pic.twitter.com/Q11bo0LOpu

As the British began to colonize India in the 1700s, a few revolutionaries started putting up a resistance. One of the most significant amongst them was #MaveeranAlagumuthu, who laid the foundation of India’s freedom struggle as early as 1759. -Sg#India75 #AmritMahotsav pic.twitter.com/o5PggPzOcC

The withdrawal of the Personal Data Protection Bill,2019 is a progressive move. The new version of the bill must strike the right balance between protecting individual data, promoting innovation & giving an impetus to digital economy & enable India to technologically leapfrog.

The government is withdrawing the Personal Data Protection Bill 2021.
We have 70,000+ Startups, around 6000 in FinTech. Many reported cases of data leaks, misuse already.
Our right to privacy gone for a toss?

Writing today in the @IndianExpress alongwith @TPanjiar on the withdrawal of the Data Protection Bill extending a harmful status quo for every Indian. It benefits unregulated powerful interests — national security, corporate profit & political interests. https://t.co/GsUWJIJZmp pic.twitter.com/f41FIV5T8c

On the rest day of the #ChessOlympiad, some players and I explored #Mammalapuram. Here you can see the UNESCO #WorldHeritageSite Descent of the Ganges, which shows the origin of the holy river. We met a lot of kind locals and had much fun. #ChessChennai2022
