The popular weekly Malayalam, Mangalam is shutting down its operations after 53 years. Mangalam which was started in 1969 was forced to discontinue the operations permanently due to the economic slowdown which resulted in the sharp decline in ad revenue and the rise in newsprint prices.
The weekly was started by MC Varghese as a monthly magazine was later published on a weekly basis. In 1985, Mangalan became the most popular weekly in Asia with over 1.7 million copies.
Reportedly, Mangalam’s other publications are almost on the verge of shutting down operations due to the economic crisis. The weekly magazine was priced at Rs 10, the management withdrew from the decision of hiking the price as other publications in the field did not increase their prices.
The magazine publishes a special international edition for non-residents. It is also known for launching various welfare activities such as dowry-free community marriages, homes for the homeless etc. The magazine is also published in Kannada.
