The Delhi High Court’s single-judge bench on Thursday rejected the pleas by social media platforms Facebook and it’s subsidiary WhatsApp which challenged an order by the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) directing a probe into WhatsApp’s new privacy policy.
The Court refused to quash the challenge by saying that it did not find any merits in the petition filed by Facebook and WhatsApp.
The CCI had said that the new privacy policy of WhatsApp would lead to excessive data collection and “stalking” of consumers for targeted advertising to bring in more users and is, therefore, alleged abuse of dominant position.
CCI further said to the court that the data collection by WhatsApp and sharing it with Facebook would amount to an anti-competitive practice or abuse of dominant position can be determined only after investigation.
WhatsApp and Facebook had challenged the CCI’s March 24 order to probe into the new privacy policy.
