Nailing that perfect caption for your post is not as easy as it seems, it’s an art, one that’s challenging and compelling. Most times, we’re confused, should we keep it short and simple or take the storytelling route, should we add emojis or just hashtags, so on and so forth.
Your caption is as important as the creative, the imagery, or the video that you upload and the trick is to get people to talk about it in the most articulate way possible. In a world where we need to catch the attention of people within mere seconds, a wisely-articulated caption not only gets people to stop scrolling but it’s also a great way to build relationships with your audience.
Here are some key pointers through which we can flex our skills to getting there
Define the tone
This is the most basic yet important of all. Defining how you want your brand to sound will make all the difference in distinguishing it from others. Your brand voice can be casual, sarcastic, funny, or even formal. Just remember, consistency is key when it comes to writing good captions!
Add an element, “You”
Whether it’s your own account or the brand’s, personifying the communication at times, helps the copy connect with the reader better. At the end of the day, you are an individual – with your own emotions and perspectives – writing the caption. Hence, apart from obviously abiding by the brand guide, remember to humanise your captions.
Keep it simple silly: The KISS rule
This rule is so applicable for a lot of things and situations in life but for now let’s just talk about copies. Today, the average attention span of a reader is down to 8 seconds and below today, so you have to choose your words wisely and carefully. Also, every post doesn’t have to be broken down to its detail, synopsize your message in the most simplest and consumable way possible.
Make way for conversations
Who likes one-sided conversations anyway! It’s like random information just put out there. So, as a brand, talk to your audience and don’t be afraid to express yourself even if it means going beyond the conventional two to three sentences.
Add a Call To Action (CTA)
If you don’t effectively direct your followers to take action, they’re likely to not do it. Effective CTAs not only inspire your audience to comment on your posts, and increase the engagement but also to make purchases, thus driving sales.
Emote well
Emojis – Sometimes that’s all you need to express your thoughts and emotions behind the post. Additionally, if you use the right emoji, it gives that edge to the copy. Additionally, and business-wise most importantly, it helps you increase your engagement by 48% (Instagram figure). Now, who doesn’t like a little extra reach.
Get your Hashtag game right
Hashtags encourage audience interactions. The right hashtags will help you extend your reach, make your posts visible to more potential customers, and help grow your account exponentially.
All in all, the perfect caption is one that provides context, adds personality, and inspires your followers to take action.
