Mumbai : Chrome Data Analytics and Media – India’s largest primary research and data analytics company conducted a study across India, usage pattern of mobile app.
With the rise of affordable internet coupled with increasing number of mobile users, not only millennials but people across ages are addicted to their mobiles and tablets which has become a way of life.
Chrome’s latest study seeks to analyse the usage pattern of mobile apps among the sample size of 2,346 respondents in India. 62% of the respondents were male and 38% of the respondents where female and the age group was from 18yrs to 55+yrs of which 44% of the respondents where between the age group of 18yrs -24 yrs, 35% of the respondents where between 25yrs – 34yrs age group, respondents between the age group 35yrs – 44yrs comprised 14% of the sample size and 6% of the respondents belonged to the age group of 45yrs to 54yrs and respondents of 55 yrs and above were 1% of the sample size. The research methodology involved interviews with mobile devices as well as structured survey in real time.
Responding to a question on, apart from the system installed App, how many apps do they have on their phone
77% of the respondents say that they have installed less than 20 Apps, 15% of them say that they have around 21 to 30 Apps whereas 7% of the respondents have 31 to 50 number of Apps on their phones. Only 1% of the respondents have more than 50 Apps.
While responding to the query on number of apps used by the respondents on a daily basis, 71% of the respondents say that on an average , they use not more than 5 Apps daily, whereas 27% of them use 6 -15 apps everyday , however it is observed that only 1% of the respondents use more than 20 Apps per day.
Taking a look at the genre of apps used by the respondents in a day, it is observed that Social Networking Apps are used daily by 70% of the respondents followed by music and games app are being used by 62% and 33% of the respondents respectively. Rest of the genre like news, shopping movies sports and so on contribute lesser percentage of usage by the respondents.
Whatsapp, becomes the most commonly used app with 49% of the respondents saying that it is the most used app by them, facebook happens to be the second most used app among the respondents with 17%. YouTube is used by 8% of the respondents.
It is observed that advertisements are the most common source for people to know about new Apps having said by 39% of the respondents. 31% of them get to know about new apps through word of mouth and 27% and 3% of them get to know while browsing and searching for a specific genre.
When asked what do the respondents usually do to avoid ads during usage of apps 64% of the respondents do nothing but just wait for the ad to get over, 18% of them stop using the particular app while 16% use ad blockers to avoid ads, only 1% of the respondents say that they opt for paid version to get rid of ads.
38% of the respondents say that they use social networking apps for more than an hour while 35% of the respondents use news apps for about 16-30mins other genres like shopping, education business are watched for comparatively lesser time by the respondents. Banking apps are used by the 39% of the respondents for less than 15 mins whereas 30% weather apps are used by 30% of the respondents for less than 15 mins time.
The study reveals that social networking genre apps are used by 77% of the respondents after they wake up in the morning while music and news genre apps are the first apps used by 11% and 6% of the respondents.
WhatsApp is the first App used by 56% of the respondents, once they wake up and 12% of them use facebook as the first app for the day. YouTube is used only by 8% of the respondents as the first app. Other app and music apps are used by only meagre percentage of respondents.
Conclusively, it is observed that, social networking apps are most used out of which Whatsapp is the most commonly used app by app users.
