As per United Nations, May 4 is the Anti-Bullying Day. While there are many more days celebrated across the world, this one, seems to miss the furor that a women’s day or a no tobacco day brings. Not to say that those days are not important, I just wish that we take Bullying a little bit more seriously. Bullying is not a concept that is restricted to the playground. It graduates to work as well. Organizations have, for long, struggled to deal with the office bullies. The same is also being observed in the digital world. Trolls and Online Bullies are forcing people off the social media bandwagon. We must recognize this problem, both in person and at work.
By sheer nature of being a bully, office bullies become the go-to person when something needs to be done. Unfortunately, once the task is given, many organizations don’t go back to check how the task is being completed. Which is where a stonewall starts to form between the employees and the organization. It is here where the HR department needs to make sure that no act of intimidation goes unnoticed.
If left unresolved, the organizations tend to take the shape of a bully! A lot of startups face this issue. In order to be aggressive, disruptive and game changers, they come through with an attitude of being a bully. While it is ok to have that thought, in today’s collaboration for success era, that may not take you long. People love companies and CEOs who are aggressive but hate it when that aggression is turned towards them. In Collaborate to Create environment, what everyone wants is a leader who is not just aggressive where needed, but also empathetic when things go wrong.
Look at Infinity War. We all know what a bully Ironman can be. We know he is a billionaire, playboy, philanthropist but what he does not say is that he is a borderline bully! And yet, in Infinity War, that bully was on the verge of dying, if not for the empathy of Doctor Strange. The Doctor saw the future, and knew, that giving the time stone would mean his own death. Yet, he chose to save Tony! He chose to Collaborate to Create that one single path that will allow them to win against Thanos, the biggest bully of them all!
Our world needs more Doctor Stranges! We need to show the bullies that it is because of us, they exist. Take us away, and they will be nothing but a soul with an egoistic superiority complex, too caught up to face the truth that deep down, they either crave for attention because they didn’t get it while they were growing up or that they are trying to cover up their weakness with a mask!
Bullying should not be entertained in any organization. Not one bit. It is important that every employee is given the due respect, irrespective to whatever differences they may have with the others. Collective action may be the need of the hour. Maybe May the Fourth deserves a lot more attention than what it gets. It’s time to call their bluff! It’s time, we #StopTheBully.
