Mumbai: Zee Cinema is all set for the World Television Premiere of Shubh Mangal Saavdhan on Saturday, 27 January at 9 PM. S. Prasanna’s Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is a tongue-in-cheek story that revolves around Mudit and Sugandha who fall in love and plan to get married. Starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead Produced by the brilliant Anand L. Rai who has given hits like ‘Tanu Weds Manu, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Raanjhanaa’ in the past, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is not only critically acclaimed and nominated at several award shows but also a box office success.
Along with the bubbly and energetic lead pair, the movie also boasts of superlative performances by the supporting cast including Seema Pahwa as an ‘open minded’ mother, Neeraj Sood as a ‘concerned’ father with eccentric solutions, Brijendra Kala as an over-friendly ‘touchy’ uncle, and many other characters with their own set of fun quirks. Set in a middle class India where everyone in the extended family and neighbourhood has an opinion about the most private details of one’s existence, and where “bachche kab karoge?” (when will you have children?) is a question people ask to even virtual strangers without any qualms, the carefully crafted characterization makes the movie a complete laughter riot.
Ayushmann Khurrana once again can be seen in his fine fettle: from a brawny Punjabi fertile Aryan ‘puttar’ that he plays in Vicky Donor to a fellow who can’t, he’s inhabited both ends of spectrum, showing no performance anxiety at all.
Talking about the premiere and his chemistry with Bhumi Pednekar, he comments, “Bhumi is one of the most brilliant and committed actresses around. She is the only one who has done that kind of physical transformation. That just shows her commitment in the craft and that’s a rarity, and we have great chemistry on screen. And even though the movie speaks about manhood, it’s about the organ which is above your belt, your heart! Standing up in bed is not as important as standing up for your girl. Despite Shubh Mangal Saavdhan handling a tricky topic, it’s still a family movie.”
Commenting on her equation with Ayushmann, Bhumi Pednekar said, “It’s been an amazing journey. We have just become better friends and colleagues. We really have the confidence to tell each other if something works for us or doesn’t. We work on scenes, and on each other’s performance, too. As people, we haven’t really changed and our bond has just grown stronger. Our chemistry in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan says it all.”
‘Shubh Mangal Saavdhan’ is about Mudit Sharma (Ayushmann Khurrana), a Gurgaon boy with a marketing job, who falls in love with Sugandha Joshi (Bhumi Pednekar). Mudit and Sugandha have met in person, seen each other’s families online, gotten engaged, and are now growing fond of each other – in that strange but not uncommon order. One day, when Sugandha’s parents are out of town, Mudit and Sugandha try to get intimate. In a comic twist of events, Mudit abruptly excuses himself to use the washroom. Eventually Mudit comes out and over tea, with the illustrative help of a limp biscuit, mutters something about a ‘gents problem’. The dysfunction may be on Mudit’s end but Sugandha makes it clear that this is a problem that they will solve together.
The young couple on the verge of marriage is faced with a unique problem and their meddling family members just won’t leave them alone to sort it out. Will Mudit find a solution to his problem? Will Sugandha and Mudit’s marriage stand the test of time?
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan will be aired on Saturday, 27 January 2018 at 9 PM on Zee Cinema.
