As Anuj Poddar puts it, “Fiction is staple diet while nonfiction is the dessert” – Star Vijay’s two new additions to the channel’s daily course were savored by Tamil TV audiences.
Popular Tamil TV quiz show ‘Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi’ returned after three years with its season 3 premiere on May 30th 2016. Hosted by famous Tamil actor Arvind Swamy, the opening night garnered 6 million viewers.
Following the format of the popular Hindi quiz show, ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, the show premiered from 7 PM to 8 PM. The TV viewership reached a peak between 7:45 PM and 8:00 PM with 3.68 million viewers.
Star Vijay experienced a 28.5% rise in its TV viewership compared to the previous week for the 7 PM to 8 PM weekday slot. The show premiere also enjoyed the fourth highest share of TV viewership across Tamil entertainment shows aired on May 30th.
In the same week, Star Vijay launched a new celebrity game show called ‘Atcham Thavir’ on 2nd June 2016. Hosting famous names from the Tamil film industry, the show attracted 4.6 million TV viewers.
Aired from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, the show witnessed a highly consistent TV viewership and reached a peak between 7:30 PM and 7:45 PM.
While Tamil Nadu claimed a gargantuan share of the TV viewership for both the show premieres, other south Indian states also had their share of TV audiences.
Giving the channel’s popular fiction shows a chase for their TV viewership numbers, Star Vijay’s two new reality TV shows are certainly leveraging the channel’s overall performance in the Tamil entertainment genre.
